Overview
Meta Margetha Grimm Lacey was born in Wisconsin and died in Connecticut, married Mark Lacey, and was an artist.
Narrative
Meta Margetha Grimm Lacey, more commonly or professionally known as Meta Grimm Lacey, was born May 19, 1887 in Jefferson, Wisconsin to George Grimm and Mariette nee Bullock. Her father was a prominent local judge and business man. She was the oldest of 4 siblings, growing up in an affluent home with at least one servant.
Her marriage license was reported in the October 15, 1909 Watertown News, so we can assume October 1909 as the approximate time of her marriage to Mark Jospeph Lacey who has been reported as a travelling salesman.
At some point Mark and Meta moved to New Britain, Connecticut where she died March 12, 1976. Mark's life spanned January 27, 1887 to 1957.
She would be classified as a local or regional artist, covering diverse subjects. To date, only oil paintings have been discovered. She donated 3 paintings by other artists from 1968-1970 to the New Britain Museum of American Art.
askArt.com claims that Lacey is in Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940". Further research indicates that the Lacey in this reference is listed as Mrs. Margaret Lacey. While a proximal match, it is no cigar. Our Lacey's middle name was Margetha - and her first name was Meta. More than likely, Margaret Lacey was the Margeret born in 1880 who lived in San Francisco 1904-20.
